With an eye on the growing importance of tourism for economic development, the Shire of South Gippsland and the twin cities of Albury-Wodonga have launched new tourism initiatives.
South Gippsland has released two new quality publications, Your Touring Guide to Phillip Island Promontory Country, with sections on nature and wildlife, adventure, heritage and culture, food and wine, and arts and crafts, and Taste, Trek, Travel, a more detailed guide to the region's wine and beer industry, food spots and accommodation. The 45-page booklet has a producers' directory, with profiles of individual businesses such as specialist bakeries, cheese manufacturers, wineries, and meat, fish and game producers.
Albury-Wodonga is set to release a strategic marketing plan for 1998-99 with goals and initiatives for the region's $160 million tourism industry.
The plan has been driven by a tourism working party, which comprises representatives from local hospitality, accommodation and transport groups and Tourism Albury-Wodonga.
The working party has identified a number of key opportunities for boosting visitor numbers, including niche markets such as educational tourism, backpackers, independent travellers and development of new touring routes around the region.
